Your work history has been patchy in recent years through unemployment, redundancy, self-employment, ill health, and so on. Crafting the Resume 37 Disadvantages: • You want to highlight promotions and career growth. You could include this sort of information on the second page of a functional resume, but it would not be as prominent as it is on a chronological resume. • Your most recent employer is highly prestigious, but its name will not be prominently displayed on the first page. You can get around this by putting the name in both the profile and the cover letter.

At one point it even questioned whether hiring managers want to be bothered with reviewing resumes. The article was partly correct. The traditional uses of a resume have evolved. Among all the clients we have advised over the last year, none have concerned themselves with paper stock. However, hiring managers and internal and external recruiters do need resumes. What they detest are poorly written resumes that make them work to understand the profile of the candidates. Resumes are still a huge part of the job search process.

But the rule of thumb is 10 to 12 years. For the most part, what we did 15 years ago is of little consequence to an employer today. Experience is not limited to paying jobs. Include volunteer work if it enhances your candidacy. Do not include salary, reasons for leaving, or supervisor’s name unless you have a very specific reason for doing so. Salary history and requirements, if requested, should be addressed in the cover letter. The listing of your job responsibilities should read like a condensed job description.
